Commitment is very important in doing a trick. You don't want to jump in a competition trying to do a new trick and not do it. This would also result in a crash, because, say, or example, you have planned to whip 180 degrees to continue your run and you don't whip at all, you would crash.
Another important thing is willing yourself to do a trick. Most professional mountain bikers use a phycologist to help them will themselves into doing a trick.
Imagining what you want to do in a trick is also very important. I, instead of actually doing the trick, imagine it when jumping. This makes me do the trick subconsciously, which is how I don't over extend or under extend my tricks.
